so, nun ist es endlich soweit: notes und domino 8 public beta steht zum download bereit. aber ihr könnt euch ruhig zeit lassen – wie immer sind die server von ibm mehr als nur überlastet, d.h. der download funktioniert – wenn überhaupt – mehr als langsam. aber immerhin: endlich gibt es den download! und natürlich gibt es auch wieder ein forum.
“Nomad” nennt sich das ganze, und ist ein neues feature des 7.0.2er clients. doch das wirklich coole daran ist, dass ihr dazu euren ältesten usb stick verwenden könnt – denn laut ibm benötigt das ganze nur 256kb:
The ability to load the Lotus Notes environment on to a USB flash drive or memory stick — Now with version 7.0.2, users can insert a 256 KB memory stick loaded with their Notes environment into the USB drive on any computer, and with a few simple steps, access their Lotus Notes environment from that computer, whether Lotus Notes was previously installed there or not. When the user is finished and removes their memory stick, none of their data or the Notes icon is left exposed on the host computer. For machines that have a companies’ VPN access present, this feature can provide a fully connected environment just as it is on the users own desktop. For machines without VPN access, this feature provides Lotus Notes in offline mode, similar to using your laptop on an airplane.

für verschiedene unix derivate gab es ja schon länger domino für 64bit, mit der version 7.0.2 gibt es das nun auch endlich für windows! mehr hier
die version 7.02 (kommt ende des jahres) bringt einige neue features; unter anderen drei, die sich wirklich gut anhören:
– der lotus notes client kann von einem usb stick verwendet werden
– smart upgrade möglich, auch wenn der anwender keine admin rechte hat
– endlich keine winmail.dat attachments mehr!

Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF) is a message format used by Microsoft in Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook when sending rich-text-format messages. Previously, non-Microsoft software could not convert TNEF to readable text because the API was undocumented. Now, using newly published specifications, Lotus Domino 7.0.2 will be able to correctly convert such messages into readable form instead of an undecipherable WINMAIL.DAT file attachment.
es gibt mittlerweile ein flash video über den neuen client – es sind allerdings leider nicht wirklich viele features zu erkennen, die den client deutlich von de(n)m mitbewerber(n) abheben würde – immerhin sieht die gui ganz nett aus

ganz witzig, nur passieren wird das sicher nicht. wenn sich ibm mit hannover ein wenig anstrengt und es dann auch noch zusammenbringt, dass die kunden mitziehen (zb nicht durch saftige preiserhöhungen wie bei nd7) – dann bleibt vielleicht eine alternative zu exchange; mehr wohl kaum
