Am 7. Dezember 1989, vor genau 15 Jahren wurde die Workgroup-Software Lotus Notes 1.0 vorgestellt. Damals hatte Notes fünf Jahre Entwicklung hinter sich und genau einen Kunden: Sheldon Laube, damals CIO von Price Waterhouse, kaufte 10.000 Lizenzen für sein Unternehmen.

Bereits die erste Version bot 1989 Verschlüsselung und Signierung von Dokumenten mit RSA-Public-Key-Verfahren sowie ein zentrales Directory, eine E-Mail-Anwendung, so genannte Doc-Links als Hypertextverweise zwischen Dokumenten und eine Zugriffskontrolle über Access Control Lists (ACL). Mit der Version 2.0 in 1991 arbeitete Iris vor allem an einer größeren Skalierbarkeit. Um sich auf größere Unternehmen mit entsprechender IT-Infrastruktur zu konzentrieren, führte Lotus eine Minimalzahl von 200 Lizenzen ein, die man für damals 62.000 US-Dollar erwarb. Mit dem Erscheinen von Notes 3.0 in 1993 hatte Lotus 2.000 Kunden mit insgesamt 500.000 Notes-Anwendern. Von Ozzie nicht vorausgesehen entwickelte sich Notes zu einem Anwendungsserver, der ein größeres Ökosystem von Business Partner mit der Entwicklung kundenspezifischer Lösungen beschäftigte. Nur wenige schafften es aber, aus dem Projektgeschäft zu unabhängigen Softwareherstellern (ISV) zu werden.

nicht, dass wir uns falsch verstehen: ich bin ein absoluter fan von domino. keine frage; doch – so wie bei jeder stück software gibt es dinge, die besser sein könnten. im falle von domino vielleicht sogar mehr als bei anderen produkten, das muss man einfach sagen.

e-pro hat seine leser aufgerufen all diese punkte aufzuzeigen; und es sind einige geworden. hier zwei beispiele:

Everyone seems to praise the Outlook client. Is ND6 getting a lot closer in functionality? I think it is, but why did it take so long? The follow-up feature is a perfect example… Outlook users scoff at that enhancement and say that “Outlook has had that for years!” and I think they are probably right. Another example might be the bolded folder names in ND6 (with the unread count in parentheses). Again, Outlook has had that for a long time. Why did it take so long to get that in Notes??? Now, if we have a rule that moves a message to a folder, we can actually SEE that something was put into a folder, because it is bolded! What a wonderful thing! In R5 we never knew that a rule actually moved anything to a folder, unless we went there and looked!

outlook hat da weit die nase vorne – auch was performance anbelangt – weil die “mailschablone” eben keine mailschablone ist sondern einen richtigen kompilierten client darstellt – ms muss sich hier nicht auf framesets, seiten, masken views, formeln und lotusscript einschränken. somit sind erweiterungen viel leichter; man kann ohne weiteres sagen, dass die stärke von notes/domino auch seine schwäche ist – und zwar eindeutig.

The color-coding in the calendar is hard-coded to the type of appointment. It would have been more useful as three color categories, like high, medium, and low, that you could have assigned to an individual calendar entry.

ja, ein vernünftiger kalender wäre echt mal nicht schlecht!

I am disappointed that we are still forced to deal with the Notes ID file for security. Why can’t Lotus give us the option of using central security like the http password for the Notes client?

ok, die id ist lästig. aber mal anders gesehen: wie viele security issues gab es? genau null. ist es nicht auch andererseits gut zu wissen eine technik einzusetzen, die seit x jahren einfach funktioniert? ich denke schon.

und abgesehen davon: wir wollen nicht vergessen, dass in der id ein private key steckt, der public key im domino directory. somit kann man alles digital unterzeichnen und verschlüsseln…. ist DAS nicht momentan irgendwie der große renner? alle stellen wie wild ca’s auf und keys aus. tja, domino hat das bereits an board. und zwar schon lange.

Following our recent column on Lotus conspiracy theories, we asked our readers if they believe there is a secret tech industry conspiracy to keep Lotus Notes and Domino down.

However, the majority of respondents told us that there’s really no conspiracy. Users believe the decline of Notes and Domino is directly tied to slick marketing on the part of Microsoft, and IBM’s inability to respond in two key areas: effective marketing and its user interface. A flashier, trendier UI, users said, would help improve decision makers’ opinion of Notes.

Even though the Notes and Domino community still believes its platform is far superior to Microsoft’s, users are upset that IBM is seemingly content with its “also-ran” status, making them feel like second-class citizens.
